“Fundación San Roque”

The place we decided to go for our social work activity is a rescued dog foundation, this place is in Subachoque, Cundinamarca and its called Fundación San Roque, so we decided that we where going to go on Saturday so we could spend more time with the dogs and helping the people who work there.

Approximately at 11am we went to the foundation and when we arrived we were surprised by the quantity of dogs there were, we brought them food and cookies that we knew they would need them and we brought a professional camera to take pictures of all the dogs and then give them so they could use them wherever they wanted; before that, we thought that dogs will be locked and sad, but it was completely the contrary, it was a very big place with more or less 100 dogs all recued form the streets of Bogota and its surroundings, and they had the dogs all over the place; as the owners told us, the foundation’s purpose is to collect, care, give a home and adopt dogs. There are many type kinds of dogs, and that was something that surprised us, there where dogs that seemed to have a race and there where others that didn’t but they where all happy and free.

After Lucy and Manolo, the owners, showed us the place and explained us everything, we proceed to help them giving the dogs the flea in a syringe putting it in their backs (as shown in the pictures). For this we had to put some gloves and tie the dogs with a collar, at the beginning it was not easy to catch the dogs but then after they thought us how, we could do it easily. With this we could see that there are dogs that are very prevent with people because they think that they are going to treat them as when they where in the streets.

In the 3 hours we spent there, we got to know very well some of the dogs that where there and to know some things about their story that impacted us and made us believe that all those dogs haven’t had an easy life and had been through a lot so being in this foundation has being a big relief for them. This made us realize that there are times where we treat very badly the dogs in the streets without understanding that there are living beings that need to eat to survive, and that suffer as any other animal in the planet. Also we realized that this couple, Manolo and Lucy, are an example for everyone, they do this without aim of profit, they do it just because they love animals and feel a great satisfaction when they see they give a good place to live to a dog or that dogs get better after the circumstances they have been through.

This experience definitely changed the way we see the dogs in the streets and made us connect with the way of living of Manolo and Lucy because they had given up everything they had for saving the lives of this animals.
